On June 20, 2024, Israel's 76th Independence Day was marked not just by festivities but also by a profound display of resilience and solidarity. Despite the backdrop of ongoing conflict, Ambassador Ilan Fluss of the Israeli Embassy emphasized the unbreakable spirit of the Jewish nation.
"For the first time in 76 years, Israel's Independence Day is overshadowed by the turmoil of war. Our celebration is further dampened by a disturbing global surge in antisemitism," he acknowledged, yet affirmed, "We don't need permission to be proud Israelis, Jews, and Zionists."
The celebration, held at the New World Makati Hotel, featured a heartfelt photo exhibition documenting the Oct. 7th terror attack in Israel. These images conveyed a powerful message of resilience, heroism, and Israel’s unwavering determination to rebuild. The exhibition also highlighted the bravery and volunteerism of Filipinos during the conflict, showcasing the deep bond between the two nations.
Ambassador Fluss expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who met with him on Oct. 11 to express solidarity with Israel, condemn the Hamas attacks, and call for the release of hostages. "My vision is to build bridges of innovation and tech nology between our two countries," Fluss stated, emphasizing the growth in bilateral ties. He paid tribute to the Filipino caregivers Angelyn Aguirre, Loreta Alacre, Grace Cabrera, and Paul Castelvi, who lost their lives in the conflict, and lauded the 28,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Israel for their unwavering support.
A special toast celebrating Philippines-Israel relations was led by Ambassador Fluss, Assistant Secretary and Chief of Protocol of the Department of Foreign Affairs Ariel Peñaranda, and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Archbishop Charles Brown. Peñaranda highlighted the historic bond between the two nations, noting that the Philippines was one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to recognize the State of Israel in 1948.
"These principles, along with our further commitment to peace above all, continue to guide the Philippines' approach to international relations," Peñaranda remarked, underscoring the deep and evolving partnership between the two nations.
The evening was also graced by a captivating performance from Rose Fostanes, the Filipina X Factor Israel winner of 2014, who serenaded the crowd with her rendition of "Hurricane" by Israeli singer Eden Golan. The embassy also distributed cherry tomato seedlings, symbolizing Israeli innovation and embodying life, hope, renewal, and growth.
In his speech, Ambassador Fluss also acknowledged the support and solidarity shown by Filipino friends, organizations, and communities. He commended a group of Filipinos who volunteered at a rehabilitation hospital in Tel Aviv for two and a half months, embodying the bayanihan spirit. This initiative, led by Israel’s Honorary Consul in Davao Jorge Marquez, exemplified the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
The shared aspirations for lasting peace, security, and prosperity resonated strongly among the attendees, reaffirming the resilient relationship between Israel and the Philippines.
The 76th Independence Day celebration not only honored Israel's past but also looked forward with hope and optimism for a brighter future.
