A congresswoman who was reportedly considered to become the next Department of Education (DepEd) secretary gave her warm greetings to Senator Sonny Angara, the person who eventually got the appointment.

“As a fellow legislator and an advocate for quality education, I am thrilled to see Senator Angara step into this vital role," Marikina City 2nd district Rep. Stella Quimbo said in her congratulatory message on late Tuesday afternoon, July 2.

"His commitment to education and his exemplary track record in public service ensure that our educational system is in capable hands,” Quimbo said.

Quimbo, senior vice chairperson of the House Committee on Appropriations, emphasized the importance of improving the Philippine education system to meet high standards of quality.

“Senator Angara, being a product of both prestigious local and international universities, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable in enhancing our education system,” she said.

Angara took up his basic education at Xavier School in San Juan, Metro Manila. He then attended Douai School in the United Kingdom (UK), and finished his Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations with honors from the London School of Economics.

The former three-term Aurora congressman finished his law degree at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law, and earned his Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Word from the grapevine was that Quimbo--one of the go-to economists and overall one of the best minds in the House of Representatives--was offered the DepEd post before Angara.

"Teacher Stella" also highlighted the legacy of Angara’s father--the late Senator Edgardo Angara--a well-known advocate for education in the Philippines.

“As the son of the dedicated and respected education advocate, the late Senator Edgardo Angara, I am confident that Senator Angara will continue his father's mission to improve our education system. His father left a legacy of promoting access and quality education in the country, and I know Secretary Angara will carry this forward.”

Quimbo said she looks forward to working closely with Angara to ensure that every Filipino child receives the highest quality education.

Angara will replace Vice President Sara Duterte for Cabinet post. Duterte tendered her resignation as DepEd chief last June 19.
