Cone on Brownlee: ‘The guy ages like fine wine’

Even at age 36, Gilas Pilipinas and Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone is not seeing his resident reinforcement Justin Brownlee slowing down anytime soon.

Brownlee, according to Cone, was aging like a fine wine and it was very much evident in his near triple-double performances with Gilas Pilipinas during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia.

“The guy ages like fine wine. I mean, it seems like the more experience he has the more he learns, he lifted the whole level of his game against the tough European defenders,” Cone said of Brownlee who landed on the Mythical team in the OQT.

Looking at how well Brownlee perform at his age, Cone couldn’t help but laugh recalling the time when people were saying that he should already look for a replacement to the Ginebra import, only to be proven wrong by Brownlee’s continued excellence.

“I remember people coming up to me three or four years ago saying you got to look for a replacement for Justin. He's getting older. Three or four years later, he's even better than he was three or four years ago,” said Cone.

After his stint with Gilas, Brownlee immediately went back to his Indonesian team Pelita Jaya where he would play a couple of more games before rejoining the Kings in the PBA Governors’ Cup for his eighth season in the league.

Father Time would certainly catch up with Brownlee at some point, admitted Cone, but he doesn't see it happening anytime soon even if he is juggling his duties with Ginebra and Gilas.

“He plays at a different level. He just continues to raise his game but you know Father time catches up with all of us. It is certainly catching up with me and I know that there's going to be a time when we're probably going to move on from Justin,” admitted Cone.

“I don't see that anytime soon though,” he stressed.
