Forbes ranks Manila as fifth riskiest city for foreign tourists

Manila has been identified as the fifth riskiest city for foreign tourists, the Forbes Advisor said.

In its report released on Wednesday, July 17, Forbes Advisor highlighted Manila's vulnerability to natural disasters as a key factor placing it among the top destinations posing challenges for international travelers.

Forbes Advisor's analysis also emphasized the significant personal security concerns and notable health security risks in Manila, further solidifying its reputation as a high-risk destination for tourists.

The study, which compared 60 international cities across seven key metrics including health security, crime risk, infrastructure security, digital security, personal security, travel safety, and natural disaster risk, revealed that Manila scored 91.49 points in overall risk.

The city ranked ninth in crime risk, fifth in personal security risk, seventh in health security risk, ninth in infrastructure security risk, and 12th in digital security risk.

Joining Manila in the top five riskiest cities for tourists are Caracas in Venezuela, Karachi in Pakistan, Yangon in Myanmar, and Lagos in Nigeria. Each of these cities presents its own set of risks and challenges for visitors on a global scale.

Caracas was noted for having the highest health security risk, crime risk, and the worst travel safety rating; Karachi for the highest personal security risk; Yangon for the highest digital security risk; and Lagos for the highest infrastructure security risk.

Meanwhile, Singapore was ranked as the safest city for tourists, having the best travel safety rating, lowest natural disaster risk, and second lowest health security risk.

Tokyo, Japan, and Toronto, Canada, scored 10.72 points and 13.6 points, respectively, while Sydney in Australia and Zurich in Switzerland scored 22.28 and 22.97, respectively.

The analysis used 42 travel insurance policies to assess the ranking of the cities.

"When companies had more than one highly rated travel insurance policy we used the highest-scoring plan. Ratings are based on the following metrics," the report said.
