Sculpting opulent forms through new techniques

Marge Organo introduces her signature style in glass artistry

The art of glass sculpting remains a niche genre in the Philippines. One must yield to the tediously precise process of manipulating glass, already a challenging medium to work with, and transforming it into opulent pieces of art that, figuratively and literally, exude striking brilliance.

Amidst the few practitioners of the rare genre, Kamenický Śenov-trained glass sculptor Marge Organo persists as one of the most prominent names in the field.

Showcasing her latest glass series at Galerie Joaquin Rockwell, the celebrated artist’s bodies of expression playfully diffuse, shape, and transform light as it passes through her glass – creating a transcendent effect that permeates iridescent shadows around the space it encompasses.

Sharing the stage are her newest endeavors in exploring the intimate process of coldworking glass: the Ribbed Series. “Nowhere in the world can you find a technique like this,” says Marge, “I created a void inside before I put the two pieces of glass together,” she further explains.

Organo shares that the highly delicate works were the triumphant results of many failed attempts in their design, for she extensively carves texturized forms onto the glass pieces before coloring and assembling them, ultimately revealing a prismatic spectrum at the very heart of the glass. The result can be seen once examined up close, enough to reveal its remarkable carving detail, as the glass carves are bathed beautifully in prismatic colors that bear a multilayered glow from within.

Glass sculptures are a common symbol of luxury, indulgence, and sophistication. Yet for Organo, her glass sculptures surpass these themes as she proclaims her works are deeply personal. Entering the field of arts a little later than her contemporaries, Organo began as a businesswoman in pharmaceuticals, on top of being a mother of four grown-up children.

Once she had more time to spare after passing down the business to his eldest son, the artist consequently began establishing a name for herself as a skilled glass sculptor. At its core, “An Intimate Brilliance” invites the viewers to witness not just the beauty of Organo’s artistry, but also the profound intimacy of her creative process.

“An Intimate Brilliance” by Marge Organo has its last exhibit day today, June 6, 2024. Galerie Joaquin Rockwell is located at the R3 Level, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell Center, Makati City. For inquiries, contact Galerie Joaquin at +63 915 414 5502 or email [email protected].
