Marbil orders intensified operation as cybercrime up by 21% in 1Q 2024

Philippine National Police (PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil ordered an intensified campaign against cybercrimes as he committed to allocate more resources and enhance capabilities to combat the growing threat of cyber-related offenses.

Marbil issued the directive as cybercrime cases rose by 21.84 percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Based on the PNP data, online selling scams, credit card fraud, and investment scams top cybercrime offenses.

The initial statement of the PNP revealed that the increased online activity, sophisticated cybercrime tactics, and the public’s lack of awareness could be the causes of the rise in cybercrimes.

When he assumed the top PNP post, Marbil vowed to provide all the necessary support to improve the anti-cybercrime capabilities of the police force.

These include skills enhancement through training programs and procurement of essential tools to further improve the operational capabilities of the PNP-Anti-Cybercrime Group.

Marbil then urged the public, particularly victims of cybercrime, not to hesitate in seeking police assistance.

“Your safety is our priority, and your feedback is essential in helping us improve our services. Together, we can build a safer and more secure community,” said Marbil.
