CAMALANIUGAN, Cagayan – A 67-year-old barangay councilor or kagawad died after he was hit by wayward tire debris in a vulcanizing shop here on Wednesday.
Police identified the victim as Demi Balianca, kagawad of Barangay Cullit, Lal-lo, Cagayan.
Investigation said Balianca was hit by a trailer truck tire that exploded while being inflated beside him.
Balianca was hit in the legs by tire debris and died on the spot.
The iron ceilings and window of the vulcanizing shop were destroyed due to the strong impact of the explosion.
Police said human error caused the tire to explode due to excessive air from the compressor.
The vulcanizer, Edison Garcia, 44, a resident of Camalaniugan, was held liable for the incident and is under police custody.
Garcia faces a case of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.
Balianca was at the shop to have the tire of his motorcycle repaired when the incident happened.
