Auto sales recover in May


Motor vehicles in May grew 7.9 percent to 40,271 units sold from 37,314 units in April, bringing total sales in the first five months of the year to 187,191 units or 12.7 percent higher than the 166,104 units sold in the same period last year.

A joint report by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) showed the industry posting significant increases in most categories for the month of May with commercial vehicles posting total sales of 29,304 units and passenger cars with 10,967 units sold. 

For the entire five months (January-May), commercial vehicles continued to drive industry performance at 137,944 units accounting for 74 percent of total sales. Meanwhile, passenger cars registered sales of 49,247 units equivalent to 26 percent share of total sales.

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation continues to dominate the industry with 46.08 percent share, followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation with 18.78 percent, Ford Group Philippines at 6.54 percent, Nissan Philippines, Inc. with 6.17 percent, and Suzuki Philippines, Inc. with 4.26 percent share.(Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat)
