In a statement, UPLB said students should take the lead author in writing articles based on student thesis, dissertation, special projects, or field studies, as they are the ones who conducted the research.

Typically, the names of student authors are listed first in the order of their contribution.

"Only list persons as co-authors if they have substantial contribution to the research (e.g., conceptualization, design, data gathering, analysis, interpretation, writing, revising the manuscript)," UPLB said.

"In journal articles, author contribution statement is usually incorporated in the manuscript," it added.

The university emphasized that advisors or supervisors, who are often more experienced, are usually listed as senior authors, often at the end of the list.

"They can also be lead authors in journal articles if they made the most contribution to the research (e.g., in research projects where student research is just one component)," it said.

In addition, UPLB noted that authors are the ones who are responsible for the research findings and conclusions.

Every author must agree to be listed as such.

"Being a funder or reviewer is not a gateway to become an author," UPLB said.

"'Honorary' and 'gift' authorships are unethical. AI (artificial intelligence) tools cannot be co- authors," it added.
