Looks like the Brazilian coach has more than proven his worth to the country’s volleyball program as the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) has decided to appeal his reassignment to another federation.

De Brito was initially set to be replaced by an International Volleyball Federation (FIVB)-appointed Italian coach, while the Olympic winning mentor was tasked to lead Chinese Taipei shortly after his stint in the Philippines.

However, the Filipinas’ historic breakthrough in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup changed PNVF’s mind and refused to just let him go at the conclusion of the weeklong tournament and after some lined up friendly matches.

“In fact, this is unofficial. I spoke [to people] on the side. We are close [to making a decision] as we keep on talking because the contract finishes on the 30th [of June],” de Brito said.

Although Alas Pilipinas suffered a semifinal exit against Kazakhstan and was now relegated to the bronze medal match against Australia on Wednesday, May 29, the Nationals’ perfect 4-0 record in the preliminary round was further proof of a promising future in the world stage.

In less than a week’s time and even after a limited preparation, the Philippines can lift its head up high as it rose in the world rankings from No. 63 to 55.

The PH squad is now the No. 8 best team in Asia.

De Brito, who continues to work on borrowed time, also vowed to give his best foot forward during the remainder of his contract should the appeal become successful.

“So what I have to do is work hard until the end of the contest. Of course, my wish is to keep on staying with these guys. All the players here in the Philippines, there’s a lot of potential to be the number one,” he said.
