6 PH team members to 65th International Mathematical Olympiad in UK named


Six students have been named to represent the Philippines in the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) that will be held in Bath, United Kingdom. 

The 65th IMO will be held from July 11 to 22 to be participated in by more than 100 countries including the Philippines.

In an announcement on the Go for Gold: Philippine IMO Team Facebook page, Filipino contestants who will compete in this year’s IMO are Filbert Ephraim Wu  of Victory Christian International School who won a silver medal in the 2023 IMO and honorable mention in 2022; Alvann Walter Paredes Dy of Saint Jude Catholic School who won a bronze medal in the 2023 IMO; Jerome Austin Te  of Jubilee Christian Academy who bagged a silver medal in the 2023 IMO; Mohammad Nur Casib of Philippine Science High School-Central Mindanao Campus who bagged two bronze medals in the 2022 and 2023 IMO; and first time IMO contestants Luke Sebastian Sy of Grace Christian College and Ervin Joshua Bautista of Southville International School and Colleges.

The six contestants to the IMO were selected through the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Camp (MOSC). 

The Philippine delegation to the 65th IMO will be headed by team leader Hazel Joh Shi of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and deputy team leader Kerish Villegas of the Ateneo de Manila University. 

The selection of the Philippine team is supported by the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP) and the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

In the 64th IMO last year in Chiba, Japan, the Philippines won three silver and thee bronze medals. 

Wu, Te and Raphael Dylan Dalida of the Philippine Science High School-Main Campus won the silver medals while Dy, Casib and Rickson Caleb Tan  of the MGC New Life Christian Academy bagged bronze medals. 

With the six medals, the Philippines rose to 25th in the ranking among 112 participating countries. The country ranked 55th in the 63rd IMO in Oslo, Norway where it won two bronze medals and four honorable mentions.
