Future is bright for PH spikers after historic semis berth in AVC Cup

  • Not only did they book a semis berth -- a first for any PH team by any gender in the AVC competitions -- but their recent exploits allowed them to hike their FIVB world ranking to six notches at No. 57 as of Sunday, May 26.

The mission was far from over as far as Alas Pilipinas was concerned despite earning a historic semifinal berth in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women late Saturday, May 25.

In fact, it was just the beginning.

Flaunting their all-around prowess anchored on versatile setter Jia De Guzman, the PH spikers drubbed Iran, 25-16, 25-13, 25-15, to keep their record pristine with a third straight victory in as many outings.

Not only did they book a semis berth -- a first for any PH team by any gender in the AVC competitions -- but their recent exploits allowed them to hike their FIVB world ranking to six notches at No. 57 as of Sunday, May 26.

“They are amazing,” said PH team coach Jorge De Brito.

“I know that we have only prepared for the tournament in just a short time, but they showed how much they wanted to play better after each game,” he added.

De Brito said how players are willing to adjust in every situation, allowing him to shuffle starters and give others time to rest.

Vanie Gandler, Faith Nisperos and Chery Nunag emerged as pivotal figures in their game against Iran, a testament to the depth and skill within the squad.

“Proud ako sa team namin kasi lahat ng mga nakalaban namin, hindi naging madali samin,” said De Guzman, whose leadership played a pivotal role in guiding her teammates to stunning performances.

But more work has to be done. After all, they are only nearly halfway through the tournament.

The Nationals are facing Chinese Taipei in their last preliminary match at press time, hoping to keep the momentum going from early victories against Australia, India and Iran.

Though the Taiwanese are already out of contention, the PH crew is wary of a rival aching to end a three-game slump.

“They’re a very good defensive team,” said De Guzman.
