BFP trainee dies from dehydration; no foul play seen

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Bureau of Fire Protection denied foul play behind the death of a trainee during training activities last week in Pagadian City.

BFP Assistant Regional Director for Operations Fire Senior Supt. Clint Cha said health officials attributed the death of  Jerwin Gonzales to possible dehydration.

Cha said health officials saw a reduction in potassium phosphate levels during examination of the trainee prior to his death.

He said the trainee could have suffered from dehydration due to the high heat index but did not complain at the time.

Gonzales, the lone BFP recruit from this city, was sent to Pagadian City for a 45-day orientation and training activity at the BFP regional training center.

During the fifth day of training on May 15, Gonzales suddenly fainted and was taken to the provincial hospital where he died after five hours of treatment.

Cha lamented Gonzales’ death, saying he was the only recruit from Zamboanga City who was able to pass all the requirements.

Gonzales’ family will receive all the benefits and perks from the BFP, Cha said.
