Meralco energizes smart substation in Batangas City

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has energized a new substation in Batangas City to boost the region's economic development efforts.

The P450-million Pallocan West Substation, equipped with smart grid technology, aims to address the increasing power demand in Batangas City and drive the city's economic growth.

Meralco said the new 69 kV-13.8 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation has enhanced switching flexibility, power quality, and reliability for the residents and businesses in the area.

Other features of the project include a 50-megavolt-ampere (MVA) power transformer, two new 13.8 kV distribution feeders, and a newly constructed 69 kV line source.

“The development of the Pallocan West substation is in support of the economic development in Batangas province and aligns well with the current administration’s priorities under its socio-economic agenda particularly on energy security and infrastructure development,” Meralco said.

Key government offices, including the Office of the Vice Governor, the Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk, Evaluation, Alleviation and Mitigation (DREAM) Zone, and the Batangas City Hall of Justice, are expected to benefit from the new substation.

Moreover, business establishments such as SM City Batangas, Wilcon Depot Batangas, and various hospitals and hotels will also leverage the enhanced power infrastructure.

Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco executive vice president and chief operating officer, emphasized the importance of reliable, stable, and safe electricity service.

“The newly energized Pallocan West substation will not only cater to the existing energy demand of Batangas City but is also designed to support the future power requirements of the emerging economic hub,” Aperocho said.

“Moving forward, Meralco will continue investing heavily on projects that will not just improve the electricity distribution system, but also contribute to ensuring that the infrastructure support for the government’s nation-building efforts,” he concluded.
