Cagayan Valley sustains P2-B El Niño damage


TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – The Department of Agriculture has recorded more than P2 billion in
damage to agriculture in Region 2 or the Cagayan Valley from the El Niño phenomenon.

Kay S. Olivas, regional technical director for Research and Regulation of DA-Region 2, said corn sustained the most damage with 117,052 metric tons.

Rice and high-value crops grown in 45,745 hectares and 43,942 farmers were also affected.

The DA-Region 2 continues to give interventions to affected farmers such as financial and production support assistance, provision of water pumps, and cloud-seeding operations.

Olivas said they are preparing for the possible onslaught of the La Niña phenomenon in the country.
