More books and a million new readers

The Big Bad Wolf returns to Manila with a mission

From May 24 to June 2, the Big Bad Wolf book sale will start its nationwide tour at Parqal, Aseana City. While “changing the world one book at a time,” the Big Bad Tour will visit six cities with the grand goal of producing a million new readers.

“Reading opens doors to new worlds and opportunities,” said Big Bad Wolf co-founder Jacqueline Ng. “With the ‘Mission of 1 New Million Readers,’ we are taking concrete steps towards changing lives through books. Our goal is not just to promote literacy, but to ignite a lifelong passion for reading across the Philippines.”

“We started our book sale in 2018 and we hope to bring the Big Bad Wolf as far as possible. Manila will always have the widest range of genres and the most number of books. In other cities, we will also bring the full range of books on a smaller scale,” added Ng.

Featuring a diverse array of books at budget-friendly prices, the tour spotlights educational titles, children’s stories, and Filipino literature, championing inclusivity in reading accessibility. This historical endeavor is dedicated to nurturing literacy, enhancing reading comprehension, and instilling a love of reading among Filipinos. The book-selling tour will also feature meet-and-greet opportunities with authors, storytelling sessions, and interactive events.

“As the Big Bad Wolf celebrates its 15th year, we want to make a mark in history and we want the Philippines to be the first to spearhead the mission: one million new readers,” said Carol Chuaying, Bad Wolf Philippines managing partner. “Before Manila, we already visited Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, and Pampanga, so the other cities taking part in the tour will come as a big surprise. There will be local publishers as well such as Adarna House, Tahanan Books, Lampara Books, Bookmark Inc., and Feast Books.”

During the media launch, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Undersecretary of Legislative Affairs Fatima Aliah Dimaporo presented the data on poverty and literacy in the Philippines. She reported on the correlation of poverty and literacy in the Philippines, thus the government agency has implemented programs to aid the members of underprivileged communities through education. Dimaporo also highlighted the efforts being made by the DSWD, in collaboration with Big Bad Wolf Books and the Malaysian embassy, to help address the need for improved literacy in these communities. “We are looking forward to the books that will be donated by the Big Bad Wolf,” added Undersecretary Dimaporo.

In his speech, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines Datu Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino who emphasized the importance of empowering younger generations to help bring the country to greater heights. “What we are doing today is to inspire the younger generation to build a better Philippines,” said the Malaysian ambassador.

Also present at the event were Emily Koa, Metrobank Credit Card General Usage Head; Patrick Marcelo, IKEA Marketing and PR Manager; Jasmin Cruz, Country Inspiration & Communication Manager, IKEA Philippines; Francis Anne Alonzo Babar, 2GO Business Unit Head for 2GO Forwarding; and Michael Sy, General Manager, Parqal.

The book sale also marks the collaboration between Big Bad Wolf and  Metrobank, extending a 0 percent three-month installment promo for purchases worth at least P3,000 to Metrobank cardholders. Swedish home furnishings brand, IKEA, will also grace the Parqal leg of the book tour with a special treat for visitors.

The Big Bad Wolf Book is open from 10 a.m. to 12 m.n. at Parqal, Aseana City.
