Q&A with Binibining Pilipinas 2024 candidates: What are you willing to sacrifice for fame?
At a glance
The candidates of the 60th Binibining Pilipinas pageant began their journey to the crown with a rewarding field day on April 25 at the Fiesta Carnival in Araneta City, where they participated with the Childhope Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Childhope Foundation).
The Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) invited the beneficiaries of the Childhope Foundation, a non-government organization for children in street situations, to enjoy a fun-filled morning with the Binibinis. Forty street children ages 7 to 12 were treated to all of the attractions of the Fiesta Carnival—from the Pinoy classic favorites Merry-go-round and bump car to the modern Trampoline Park, go-kart, Roller Skate Rink, and Digital Arcades. The 40 Binibinis shared snacks and lunch with the kids to cap off the meaningful day.
“For the pageant's diamond year, BPCI is focusing its efforts on children’s welfare through strategic partnerships and volunteer work. Advocating for children has always been the thrust of the organization, so expect our Binibinis to be involved in more charitable works and advocacy campaigns,” Diane Romero, Executive Director of J. Amado Araneta Foundation, said.
In a moment of nostalgia and excitement, Fiesta Carnival, the iconic indoor amusement park in Araneta City, reopened its doors in 2023.
The park, known for its beloved classic rides, now boasts a fusion of modern and exciting attractions and activities.
This transformation was made possible through a partnership between Araneta City and REKS Amusement, aiming to share the magic of this amusement with contemporary audiences.
At the charity event, Manila Bulletin Entertainment asked 10 candidates in random what they would be willing to sacrifice for fame if they were to become one of the Binibining Pilipinas queens.
Shannen Manzano (General Santos) - I am not willing to give up everything for fame. Being a beauty queen, for me, is a symbol of hope. I'm going to use that to further my advocacy. Fame is a double-edged sword. And I think being a beauty queen is more than that.
Erika Cassandra Ballon (Pasig City) - When I started my journey in Binibining Pilipinas, I already gave up everything I could because I knew what I was doing and wanted to pursue it. So, anything that I can do not only for the fame but for the purpose of being a beauty queen.
Myrna Esguerra (Abra) - I don't think I'm willing to give up everything for fame but rather for the cause of Binibining Pilipinas. This year, the heart of Binibining Pilipinas is for charities. So, I'm willing to give up my time and my time with my family to serve the people and children who are its beneficiaries.
Mae Kimberly De Luna (Caloocan City) - I don't think there's something to give up if I become one of the winners. I will continue the things that I am doing right now, which is charity work. I'm also Miss Caloocan 2024, a Philippine Air Force Reserve. What I've been doing for a year now is to keep on doing charity work. I don't think there's something to give up for fame. Being a Bininbining Pilipinas, kasama na talaga 'yung fame. So it's just a matter of balancing everything and focusing on the things that you prioritize.
Kara Daniella Villarosa (Negros Occidental) - Before I joined, I was very much informed about what would happen if I did get a placement or a crown. I wouldn't be here today If I weren't ready to sacrifice things for it. I think being here today is more than enough to show everyone what I'm willing to sacrifice if I do get a crown.
Kristin Wyeth Marie Baconawa (Quezon City) - Of course, I'm willing to give up two years of my career to become one of the Binibinis so that I can embrace and represent our country well. I want to represent my city, Quezon City because I grew up here. If I become Binibining Pilipinas International, I would be more willing to sacrifice my time, energy, and effort to represent our country well.
Geraldine Buenafe (Batangas City) - I think love is what I'm willing to give up for fame. I think the first thing that I should remember is the people who are taking care of me and supporting me during this journey. It's all about what I can give to people, not what I can receive from them.
Marikit Manaois (Baguio City) - The Binibining Pilipinas is not just about being a beauty queen; it's a platform where you can inspire people through your voice. If I were to become one of the queens, I would take advantage of this platform to become a beacon of hope for the less fortunate and share the power of discovering yourself and giving back. The responsibility of being a beauty queen is bigger than myself but it's only a small price for me to pay for the change I want to make for the world.
Phoebe Godinez (Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu) - I am willing to give up my time because I know I'd be busy with many projects with BPCI. I'm so willing to give up my time, sleep, and energy for something so worth it.
Nicklyn Jutay (Iloilo) - I'm willing to give up my short-term happiness for long-term success.
Zianah Joy Famy (Cavite) - If I would give up anything for the crown, I guess it would have to be my privacy. I want to use my platform to promote my advocacy and bring it to a national level, such as helping kids.
