28 students faint due to extreme heat during festival parade in Iloilo


ILOILO CITY – At least 28 students fainted due to the extreme heat during the opening parade of the San Dionisio town festival in Iloilo province on Labor Day.

TWENTY-EIGHT students fainted during a festival performance in San Dionisio, Iloilo on May 1.

The San Dionisio Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said the students were participating in the mass dance competition that was part of the opening parade for the Pana-ad Festival.

Twenty were referred to Sara District Hospital in the neighboring town of Sara, Iloilo.  

They are recovering but are being closely monitored as of posting time.

San Dionisio Mayor Darwin Bajada released an executive order suspending face-to-face classes on May 2 and 3 as precautionary measure against the extreme heat.

The heat index here and the province of Iloilo has been above 40 degrees Celsius for the past three weeks. Last April 27, the heat index was 46 degrees Celsius.
