“Since last year, hospitals have been advised to anticipate and equip themselves to address food/waterborne, vector-borne, and heat-related illnesses,” the DOH said.

DOH noted that part of the initiative involves updating surge capacity and continuity plans; conducting regular inventories of medical supplies and resources; and ensuring the functionality of the healthcare provider network and referral system in their respective areas.

The DOH stressed the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the impact of El Niño on public health.

The health agency also said that the DOH Central Office, particularly through the Health Emergency Management Bureau, is actively coordinating with Regional Health Offices and hospitals to ensure the continuous delivery of health services, especially in the event of a surge in patients due to El Niño-related illnesses."
