A team of student-researchers from the Angeles City Science High School is set to represent the Philippines at the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2024 (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California from May 11 to 17.
With their project "In Vitro Study of Bioceramics from Bamboo Leaf Ash and Green Mussel Shells with Silver (Ag) Coating and 3D-Printing Applications for Bone Regeneration," the students, alongside their coach Lolita Bautista, have garnered recognition for their groundbreaking research.
“The study was hailed for its potential impact on bone regeneration,” DOST said in a statement.
Supported by the Department of Science and Technology-Central Luzon Grants-In-Aid (DOST GIA), the students' success at the Department of Education’s (DepEd) 2024 National Science & Technology Fair (NSTF) led to their qualification to the ISEF 2024.
Their journey continued with regional acclaim and culminated in the NSTF win this year.
DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. pointed out the importance of youth participation in science and technology innovation (STI) during his address at the NSTF opening ceremony.
He encouraged students and educators to explore opportunities offered by DOST, including scholarships and specialized training, further underlining DOST's commitment to empowering the next generation of innovators.
The secretary also underscored DOST's commitment to empowering both learners and educators alike, mentioning that in 2023, DOST had provided 50,000 scholarships for undergraduate students and nearly 5,000 scholarships for masters and Ph.D. students.
Moreover, the department commended the young student researchers for their impactful contributions and highlighted their potential to catalyze innovation in science and technology on a global stage.
