Barangay tanod killed, 3 hurt in Sagay City fiesta fracas


BACOLOD CITY – A barangay tanod (watchman) was killed and three others, including a 17-year-old boy, were injured in commotions during a fiesta in Barangay Malubon, Sagay City, Negros Occidental on Easter Sunday.

Police withheld the names of the 32-year-old fatality and injured.

Police Lt. Hannah Banquil, deputy chief of the Sagay City Police Station, said barangay tanods responded to a commotion between two groups of intoxicated young adults.

Banquil said a responding tanod was hit by a stone in the head that killed him and a 21-year-old man was injured and treated in a hospital. 

Police have identified two persons involved in the incident and are preparing homicide charges against the suspects.

Another barangay watchman and a minor were injured after they were shot by a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu).

Banquil said the 32-year-old intoxicated militiaman went to a sari-sari store (community convenience store) to purchase an item.

The suspect was irked when he was asked what he is buying and brandished his firearm. 

Residents were alarmed and reported the incident to barangay tanods who were shot by the suspect.

Banquil said a 56-year-old tanod sustained a bullet wound in the chest and the suspect’s teenage cousin was injured in the right foot.

The wounded tanod was taken to a hospital here and will be undergo surgery and the minor has been discharged from the hospital.

Police recovered the suspect’s .45 caliber firearm with two magazines and bullets and these will be subjected to ballistic examination.

The suspect was arrested and faces frustrated homicide charges.
