DFA verifying deaths of 2 Pinoys in flood-stricken Dubai

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is verfying reports that two Filipinos in flood-stricken Dubai died after getting electrocuted in the water.

"Our consulate is checking with the Filipino community members there reports that two unfortunately died from electrocution and we're verifying it. We hope not," DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega told reporters at the House of Representatives on Thursday afternoon, April 18. 

De Vega, who attended a briefing of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, said that the report the DFA received bared that the two Filipinos were "nakuryente sa tubig (electrocuted while in the water)". 

"We're going to repatriate the remains if necessary," the official said. 

"Others Filipinos are fine so far. But the Consulate has advised the Filipino community--sa Dubai ang worst (Dubai was hit the worst)--to follow the local government rules to stay at home," he further said. 

De Vega noted that local authorities in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were having a difficult time grappling with the floods there. 

"We'll find out by the end of the day," he said regarding the two supposed Filipino fatalities.
