MIAA finds solution to resolve power fluctuations at NAIA

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is looking to rent generators to resolve power issues at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

MIAA General Manager Eric Ines said the airport management has been eyeing a generator that can produce six megawatts to address power supply fluctuation which also affects the air-conditioning system at NAIA, particularly at Terminal 2.

Even though the air conditioning units at NAIA Terminal 2 are still operational, Ines said there were still issues experienced by the passengers including weak air conditioning due to insufficient electrical power supply.

This is considered a crucial issue by the MIAA especially amid the summer heat.

"If all of the aircon chillers are running simultaneously, there is a risk of overloading the power system and causing a power outage because the switch gears at the MIAA power station are outdated and [they] require replacement," Ines added.

One of the primary factors attributed to the elevated temperatures experienced in the departure area of NAIA Terminal 2 is the architectural design of the building being filled with glass, allowing heat from outside to enter the facilities.

The MIAA is planning to tint the glass portion of NAIA Terminal 2 to at least lessen the heat coming through it.

Ines said the MIAA was already studying the cost and benefit of installing nano tint at the pre-departure area to mitigate the warm temperatures felt by the passengers.

Ines apologized to those affected by the inconvenience at NAIA as he promised to improve passenger experience over the next few weeks.
