One of the legendary anime creators, Akira Toriyama, sadly passed away on March 1, 2024, at the age of 68.
The news of his death was publicly announced through the official "Dragon Ball" X account.
In their announcement, it was disclosed that the cause of Akira's death was an "acute subdural hematoma."
According to information provided by the UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Health's website, “an acute subdural hematoma (SDH) is a clot of blood that forms between the brain's surface and the tough outer covering known as the dura mater. This condition typically occurs due to the stretching and tearing of veins on the brain's surface, which happens when the brain experiences sudden jolts or shakes as a result of a head injury. These clots appear as dense, crescent-shaped masses over a portion of the brain's surface.”
On popular health information website, WebMD, we can find the symptoms of the condition, “symptoms of subdural hematoma can include headaches, confusion, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, memory loss, seizures, vision changes, breathing problems, paralysis, coma, and loss of consciousness.”
In the official statement regarding Akira's passing, they expressed gratitude and respectfully informed fans that they "would not accept flowers, condolence gifts, visiting, or any other offerings." They wished for this time to be dedicated to mourning and remembering Akira's remarkable contributions to the world of anime.
Akira Toriyama, born on April 5, 1955, began his manga journey at the age of 23. Alongside his iconic work on Dragon Ball, he also served as the creative mind behind other popular creations such as Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and Sand Land.
His talent and imagination have not only left an indelible mark on the anime industry but also a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of anime fans.
