Village dad shoots ‘tanod’ dead in Leyte


LA PAZ, Leyte – A barangay "tanod" or watchman was gunned down by a barangay councilor in an interior barangay here on Tuesday night, March 12.

TWO individuals were killed in separate incidents in La Paz, Leyte on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Police identified the victim as Francis Berones of Barangay Bagacay East here.

Investigation said Berones figured in a heated altercation with the suspect, Julio Custudio, during the birth anniversary party of Custodio's daughter earlier that day.

Berones was driving his motorcycle on his way home when the suspect blocked his path. The suspect drew a firearm and shot Berones multiple times.

The victim was taken to a hospital in Burauen, Leyte where he was declared dead.

Custodio was arrested following the incident while he was drinking with friends. 

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old construction worker was stabbed to death by his nephew in Poblacion District 3, this town, on Wednesday night, March 13.

The victim was identified as Gerano Lucentes.

Investigation said that the victim was driving his motorcycle when the suspect, Taba, 35, blocked his path, prompting him to slow down. 

The suspect pulled out a short-bladed weapon from his waist and stabbed the victim in the back. The victim slumped to the ground but the suspect continued to stab him.

The victim was taken to the Burauen District Hospital where he was declared dead.

The suspect was arrested in a hot-pursuit operation. Taba said he was on his way to surrender to the police when he was intercepted.
