In the men's category, Richard Salario, a proud Philippine Army soldier and native of Marilao, Bulacan, took on the challenge of competing against foreign runners. Leading the pack from the start, Richard maintained a solo lead until the 3-kilometer mark. As the race progressed, Richard Salario demonstrated his unwavering spirit and exceptional endurance. In the latter part of the marathon, particularly in the Makati area, he gave his best to regain a solo lead and continued to push forward. His efforts paid off as he crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 2:25:24.
In the women's category, Maricar Camacho, a proud Caviteña hailing from Cavite, also displayed her tenacity. She challenged the Kenyan runner, Lilian Jepkosgei Kiprop, and managed to overtake her in the last 4 kilometers of the race. Maricar finished the marathon in an impressive 3:09:18, while Lilian Jepkosgei Kiprop came in second with a time of 3:16:32.
After the race, Richard Salario shared his inspiring words, saying, "This is to motivate fellow Filipino runners that we can actually compete and keep pace with international runners." Their outstanding performances earned both Richard and Maricar a cash prize of 50,000 PHP and the opportunity to represent the Philippines in the Taiwan International Marathon, an honor bestowed upon them by RoadRacingEvents president Dino Jose and Philippine Airlines.
The Philippine Airlines 42nd Manila International Marathon not only showcased the talent and determination of Filipino athletes but also demonstrated the power of unity and the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people.
