Kuwait Appellate Court affirms conviction of Ranara killer, DMW to pursue case for civil damages

Following the conviction of the Kuwaiti tagged in the brutal murder of overseas Filipino worker Jullebee Ranara, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is now pursuing civil action for damages against the father of her killer.

DMW officer-in-charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said they have already informed the family of Ranara of the legal measures that will be pursued aside from the result of the legal battle before the State of Kuwait’s Appeal Court.

“I have issued instructions to our Migrant Workers Office in Kuwait (MWO-Kuwait) to work with our retained legal counsel in filing a civil action for damages against the father of the convicted perpetrator,” said Cacdac.

In January last year, the burnt body of 35-year old household worker Ranara was discovered in a desert. The 17-year old perpetrator was arrested within 24 hours by the Kuwaiti police.

Nine months later, the Department of Foreign Affairs announced that the killer of Ranara was convicted by a Kuwait court and was sentenced for one year imprisonment for driving without license and 15 years for murder.

Cacdac said the State of Kuwait Appeal Court upheld the guilty verdict and sentence for the murder of OFW Jullebee Ranara.

*We welcome the ruling of the State of Kuwait’s Appeal Court upholding the guilty verdict and sentence of 16 years imprisonment against the accused for the murder of OFW Jullebee Ranara,” said Cacdac.

“We have informed the Ranara family of the Court’s ruling and have assured them of our continued utmost support and assistance, as directed by the President,” he added.
