Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa supported the custom of giving chocolates to loved ones on Valentine’s Day by citing their health benefits, but emphasized the need of choosing the darker and more bitter variety.
"Chocolate stimulates neurotransmitters in our brain's hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is responsible for producing hormones related to emotions of love, so if you notice that those who are given chocolate tend to become more fond of the giver," Herbosa explained during an interview with Radyo Pilipinas on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Herbosa also advised choosing the darker, more bitter chocolates for gifting, as they are healthier.
“The darker the chocolate, the more bitter, the healthier,” he said.
Nonetheless, the DOH director highlighted striking a balance between indulgence and wellness by urging people to mark Valentine's Day with kind and health-conscious acts.
