Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna Pangan led the unveiling and lighting of the Prosperity Tree at Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz in Binondo, Manila, to mark the start of the Lunar New Year celebration.
On Thursday, Feb. 1, Lacuna-Pangan took pride in the activities prepared in Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world.
The mayor invited everyone to take part in these activities to keep the Chinese culture and tradition alive.
As the city celebrates the 430th year of Manila Chinatown, she said, the city government will continue to honor the presence of fellow Filipinos with Chinese descent.
She thanked the Department of Tourism, Manila department of tourism, Chinese committee associations, Binondo and San Nicolas barangay officials among others, for their unwavering support.
Manila City Band graced the event by serenading the audience with its classic pieces.
Sharlene Zabala-Batin, Department of Tourism-National Capital Report (DOT-NCR) regional director, announced that the City of Manila received an international award called “World’s Travel Award- City Destination of the Year 2023.
She also acknowledged the participation of Mayor Honey in the recently launched “Hop-On, Hop-Off,” a bus tour to visit top attractions in Manila.
Meanwhile, visitors adorned the lighted Prosperity Tree, which served as a new selfie galore in Binondo.
A fireworks display was also held to conclude the occasion.
