Cargo vessel sinks in Northern Samar; 10 crew rescued, 5 missing


TACLOBAN CITY – Search and rescue operations are underway for five of 15 crew members of cargo vessel MV Jherlyn Khatness that submerged in the sea of Barangay Balicuatro, Lavezares, Northern Samar on Dec. 30.

Ensign Bryhl Amay, Coast Guard Station Northern Samar acting commander, said the vessel was transporting cement from Naga City, Cebu.

It was enroute to San Jose, Northern Samar when it encountered large waves and submerged.

The PCG-Northern Samar advised all ships and watercraft transiting the area to take note of the information and take precautionary measures at all times. 

“Mariners transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution and report any sightings of the missing crew or debris to the nearest Coast Guard Station.”

Rescue operation is also ongoing in the sea of Barangay Lipata, Allen, Northern Samar.

Ten crew members were rescued and in the custody of authorities.
