Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), lauded on Tuesday, Dec. 3, the anti-riot cops for what he described as bravery and professionalism when they were attacked by rallyists during the Bonifacio Day protest in Manila.
At least eight policemen were injured, including one who suffered an eye injury, while preventing protesters from breaching into a barrier that was set on Loyola Street in Manila.
Police have already filed a case against a member and a leader of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) in connection with the incident that happened on Nov. 30.
Marbil said the clash reflected the PNP’s dedication to service despite the inherent dangers of their jobs and a reminder of the risks officers face while fulfilling their duty to maintain public safety.
He said the Mendiola incident saw rallyists engage in confrontations with police officers deployed to maintain order during the national holiday. Viral videos circulating on social media showed rallyists attacking a police officer during the commotion.
"Being a policeman is often a thankless job. Every day, our officers put their lives on the line, enduring risks and sacrifices that frequently go unnoticed. Yet, despite these challenges, the sense of fulfillment derived from serving the people and upholding peace is immeasurable. This is the essence of public service that every police officer embraces," said Marbil.
"Our officers demonstrated professionalism and composure during the Mendiola rally, showcasing their commitment to peace and their ability to balance enforcement with restraint. This bravery and dedication deserve national recognition," he added.
Meanwhile, Marbil urged the public to recognize and respect the sacrifices made by police officers.
