Visual artist Arnold Lalongisip’s recently concluded exhibit “The Madrid Collection” at the Art Underground was a testament to the artist’s connection with the Spanish capital. This intimate series, comprised of just 12 meticulously crafted pieces, was a unique perspective on Madrid, captured through the artist’s signature monochromatic palette.

“As a painter, I’m drawn to both art and architecture,” says Lalongisip. “Madrid’s classical buildings and their impeccable preservation left a deep impression on me. I felt compelled to capture their beauty in my work.”

His personal experiences in Madrid have profoundly influenced his art. “Madrid opened my eyes to a different world, so different from the Philippines,” he says. “I was both happy and sad. Happy because of the city’s beauty, but also a bit sad realizing the vast difference between Spain and the Philippines. I wish we could be like them.” These contrasting emotions and the city’s architectural grandeur have found their way onto his canvases.

Madrid is a city steeped in art and architectural history. From the iconic Prado Museum showcasing masterpieces by renowned artists like Goya and Velasquez to the grandeur of the Royal Palace, the city offers a feast for the senses. The city’s architecture is also a blend of styles ranging from the medieval Almudena Cathedral to the modern marvels of the Golden Triangle of Art. This rich cultural tapestry provided endless inspiration for Lalongisip to create his collection.

Working with a limited palette of black and white presents unique challenges. “It’s demanding to create a compelling image using only two colors,” Lalongisip admits. “But it’s also a way to challenge myself and improve my skills. I believe that less is more, and monochrome allows me to focus on the essence of the subject.

With “The Madrid Collection,” Lalongisip aimed to inspire viewers to appreciate the beauty of Madrid and consider how we can emulate the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage. “I hope people will see the beauty of Madrid and think about how we can replicate their positive approach to city planning and preservation,” he muses.

When asked about his favorite piece in the collection, Lalongisip chooses Monumento to Alfonso Xii. “It’s my favorite because it encapsulates the cleanliness and beauty of Madrid,” he explains. “The image of a boat with its reflection on calm water is a recurring theme in my work and it’s perfectly captured in this piece.”

Another striking masterpiece is Lalongisip’s striking depiction of the iconic Metropolis Building, a landmark of Madrid’s Gran Via. The painting showcases the grandeur of Madrid’s architecture, with a mix of styles visible in the surrounding buildings. True to Lalongisip’s style, the scene is rendered in a striking black and white, emphasizing the play of light and shadow and giving the scene a timeless quality. Lush trees frame the scene, adding a touch of nature to the urban landscape.

“The Madrid Collection” offered a rare opportunity to experience the vibrant city of Madrid through the eyes of an artist. Lalongisip’s meticulous attention to details and his ability to evoke emotion with a limited palette made the exhibit a must-see for art enthusiasts.
