Glen Yang caught fire in overtime as Eastern asserted its mastery of San Miguel, 99-91, to get back on the winning track in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Sunday, Dec. 22.
The veteran point guard just took over in the extra period, firing seven of his team’s 12 points – including the dagger triple with 43 seconds left that eventually settled the score and left the Beermen heartbroken once more.
The Hong Kong-based team not only completed a repeat of its 71-62 victory over SMB during their East Asia Super League clash just five days ago but also picked up the bounce-back win after dropping its game against the NorthPort Batang Pier last time out.
Yang fired 26 points on an efficient 11-of-15 shooting from the field, including a 4-of-5 clip from deep to go with his four rebounds and four assists.
The former Bay Area Dragons playmaker had plenty of support though with import Chris Mclaughlin chipping in 18 points, 11 rebounds and five steals while Hayden Blankley and Kobey Lam finished with 15 and 13, respectively.
Eastern also had solid outing from Siu Wing Chan who had 10 points and five assists as the team improved to a solo second in the standings with a 6-2 slate.
Like in its game in Hong Kong though, Eastern had to overcome a huge second half uprising from SMB, although this time the Beermen managed to drag the game to an extra period – all thanks to a booming trey from CJ Perez that knotted the game at 87-all at the end of regulation.
The Beermen, however, simply ran out of gas as Eastern outscored SMB, 12-4, in overtime to pull away for good.
Jabari Narcis, who replaced injured Torren Jones, had a solid debut of 28 points and 10 rebounds while June Mar Fajardo, who carried the Beermen back into the game behind his second half explosion, finished with 23 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
CJ Perez and Marcio Lassiter had 18 and 13 points, respectively, as coach Leo Austria absorbed his first loss in the PBA since being reinstalled as the team head coach three games ago.
SMB slid to the middle of the standings with an even 3-3 slate.
