On Dec. 5, 2024, the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila hosted its highly anticipated media night at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City. The event was a gesture of gratitude to the Philippine media for their unwavering support of the Embassy’s activities and initiatives throughout the year. It also celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Philippines, highlighting the enduring friendship between the two nations.
This milestone year featured various activities aimed at strengthening people-to-people connections and fostering mutual understanding. In partnership with ArtDialogo Asia and Tourism Malaysia, the Embassy introduced the cross-cultural art program “Senie-Skwela” to Malabon City and Tawi-Tawi, offering participants an opportunity to explore the rich artistic traditions of both countries. Complementing this initiative was an art exhibit held from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 2024, supported by Artemis Art, the Makati City Government, and One Ayala. The exhibit showcased the talents of Malaysian and Filipino artists.
Ambassador Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino emphasized the significance of these efforts in his speech: “This year has been a celebration of our shared creativity and culture. Through our programs, we not only bridge the gap between our nations but also build lasting friendships.”
In November, the Embassy’s valued partners and stakeholders were treated to a captivating mentalist show at the historic Goldenberg Mansion, symbolizing the power of collaboration and cultural exchange. The year’s initiatives culminated in a high-profile forum titled “60 Years of Malaysia-Philippines Relations: Deepening Cooperation in a Dynamic World.” Organized in partnership with the University of the Philippines Diliman Asian Center, the forum gathered government officials, diplomats, academics, and think tanks to discuss key issues and opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
This year also included official visits by Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan and Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, further strengthening ties between the two nations. As Malaysia prepares for its ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, the Embassy in Manila reaffirmed its commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable growth in the region.
Sarawak’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the importance of cultural tourism. “Sarawak, with its unique blend of heritage and biodiversity, is a testament to Malaysia’s cultural richness. We look forward to welcoming more visitors from the Philippines to experience our vibrant traditions and natural wonders,” he said.
The media night concluded with a warm toast to the continued partnership between Malaysia and the Philippines. Ambassador Castelino expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the attendees.
