CAAP to acquire state-of-the-art aircraft tracking, surveillance system

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has partnered with an international company for the procurement of what it described as a state-of-the-art aviation surveillance broadcast technology.

CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo said the planned acquisition of the Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology will improve the agency's ability to monitor and manage air traffic within the expansive Manila Flight Information Region (FIR).

He said the monitoring system spans  approximately 3 million square kilometers.

"This partnership with Aireon provides CAAP with real-time, global surveillance capabilities, addressing long-standing challenges in tracking aircraft over remote and oceanic areas. The deployment of this technology is especially critical given the sharp rise in air traffic within the Manila FIR in recent years," said Tamayo.

Tamayo said the initiative will enable the Philippines to uphold world-class safety standards while accommodating increasing regional air travel demand.

By adopting this advanced surveillance technology, Tamayo said the Philippines joins other aviation leaders in the region, such as Hong Kong and India in air traffic management strategies.
