House Speaker Martin Romualdez has congratulated Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David for the latter's historic appointment as cardinal.

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David on his appointment to the College of Cardinals. This is a tremendous honor, not just for Cardinal David, but for the entire Filipino nation," Romualdez said in a statement Monday, Dec. 9.

Cardinal David, 65, served as Kalookan bishop for nine years. The prelate goes by the nickname "Ambo".

"This recognition affirms the respect and trust he has earned through his tireless work for the poor, the vulnerable, and those who need guidance. It is a moment of pride for all Filipinos to see one of our own take on this significant role in the global Catholic Church," said Romualdez, who echoed the nation’s joy over the development.

The House leader says Cardinal David has always been a steadfast advocate for truth, justice, and compassion.

"His leadership and service, especially during challenging times, have left a deep impact on the Church and the communities he serves," said Romualdez, president of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD).

"On behalf of the House of Representatives, I congratulate Cardinal David and assure him of our prayers and support as he takes on this important mission," he further said.
