The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging consumers to prioritize safety this holiday season by purchasing only certified Christmas lights and fireworks.
In a statement on Thursday, Nov. 5, Trade Secretary Cristina Aldeguer-Roque said that consumers are advised to consult the DTI's official list of certified products before buying to ensure safety.
“To ensure a safe and worry-free holiday celebration, we strongly encourage consumers to be vigilant and check the DTI’s official list of certified products before making any purchase. Avoid uncertified products that pose safety hazards,” Roque said.
The DTI-Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) has published a list of certified Christmas lights and fireworks products on its website to help consumers make informed decisions. This list includes the names of manufacturers, importers, and product descriptions.
The DTI emphasized the importance of looking for mandatory marks such as the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Stickers and Philippine Standards (PS) Marks on these products.
DTI said these marks signify that the products have undergone rigorous testing and meet the required quality and safety standards.
“Mandatory marks such as the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Stickers and Philippine Standards (PS) Marks signify that Christmas lights and fireworks have undergone rigorous testing and meet the required quality and safety standards. This aligns with our goal to ensure a safe Christmas under Bagong Pilipinas,” the trade chief added.
Roque also highlighted the DTI’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring product quality.
“The DTI is committed to protecting all Filipino consumers. By providing easy access to these lists, we are empowering the Filipino people to make informed decisions and prioritize their safety at all times, especially this holiday season,” Roque said.
Christmas lights and firecrackers are among the 109 products and systems subject to mandatory certification under the BPS.
The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body authorized to promulgate Philippine National Standards (PNS). While PNS adoption is voluntary, it becomes mandatory when used as a reference in technical regulations issued by regulatory authorities.
