DILG: Government saves P4.3-B in litigation costs due to settlement of cases at barangay level

The settlement of cases at the barangay level has saved he government P4.3 billion legal costs, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic’’ Remulla.

The settlement of disputes among neighbors were done with the proper handling of the “Lupong Tagapamayapa, an administrative body created by law to operationalize the barangay justice system.

During the Lupong Tagapamayapa’’ Incentive Award (LTIA) rites, Remulla praised the group for its excellent performance with the astonishing 77 percent resolution rate of cases in the barangay squabbles.

“I am very proud of your work. Let me make this commitment to you that we will never forget the important work that you all do,” Remulla noted.

Remulla acknowledged that work in the barangay is humongous, adding that the sacrifice of its officials is far greater than their counterparts in the national government.

“I know  that you are working and your sacrifice is greater than the sacrifice of all of us in the national government. Let me make this commitment to you, that we will never forget the important work that the barangays do,’’ Remulla pointed out.

The LTIA is an annual recognition system for Lupons which demonstrate outstanding performance in implementing the Katarungang Pambarangay (KP) in their locality.

This year’s national champions are Barangay Budaan, Cebu City for Highly Urbanized Cities (HUC) category, Barangay Poblacion Zone 20, Baybay City, Leyte for Component / Independent Component Cities (C/ICC) category, Barangay Rizal, Bansalan, Davao del Sur for 1st to 3rd Class Municipalities category and Barangay Sinian, Baliangao, Misamis Occidental for 4th to 6th Class Municipalities category.

The first runners-up are Barangay Balurang, Cagayan de Oro City for the HUC Category; Barangay San Vicente, Biñan City, Laguna for the C/ICC Category; Barangay Mulawin, Orani, Bataan for the 1st to 3rd Class Municipalities Category; and, Barangay Santa Lucia, Samal, Bataan for the 4th to 6th Class Municipalities Category. 

Meanwhile, the second runners-up recipients are Barangay Tibungco, Davao City for the HUC Category; Barangay Cupang Proper, Balanga City, Bataan for the C/ICC Category; Barangay Poblacion, Trento, Agusan del Sur for the 1st to 3rd Class Municipalities Category; and, Barangay Agban, Baras, Catanduanes for the 4th to 6th Class Municipalities Category.
