Senators hopeful Trump’s victory would ‘bode well’ for Philippine-US relations

Senators on Thursday, November 7 expressed hope that Donald Trump’s election victory would yield a positive influence to the current bilateral relations between the Philippines and the United States.

Sen. Loren Legarda expressed certainty that the Philippines will continue to affirm its commitment to enduring values that bind the two nations—"respect for democratic process and the will of the people.”

“As a firm advocate for peace and democracy, I respect the continuity of democratic governance in our long-standing ally,” Legarda said in a statement.

“Our diplomatic and defense alliance with the United States has long served as a pillar of stability in the Asia-Pacific, guided by shared aspirations for peace, security, and respect for sovereignty,” she noted.

“I am hopeful that under the new US administration, we can further deepen cooperation, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as economic resilience, climate action, and regional security,” the lawmaker stressed.

Meanwhile, Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero said he is expecting that the Republican’s election as the 47th president of America would be beneficial to the Philippines.

“I cannot foretell what President-elect Trump may or may not do. However, our country’s relations with the US was fairly well under his presidency before, so I am hopeful that his assumption would bode well for our country,” Escudero said.

Former Senate chief, Sen. Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, on the other hand, said Trump’s victory was a testament that the US has once again “leaned towards Conservatism.”

“We can see that the United States of America has once again leaned towards Conservatism, the protection of the family and their respect for God and Country!” Zubiri said in his Facebook post.

“When the other camp uses abortion as a key campaign slogan and the heavily using a woke agenda, then the silent majority will awaken and say enough is enough,” he said referring to the camp of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

“Imagine, Trump is even winning the popular vote as of now. That’s the result, no question about it. As a Catholic my heart is full of joy that hopefully there would be an agenda that is Pro Family, Pro God, Pro Economy even Pro Gun and Anti Crime. The people have spoken.. Democracy wins,” Zubiri said.

Sen. Robinhood “Robin” Padilla also welcomed Trump’s victory and also hoped that the country will benefit from his leadership in the coming years.

“I also laud the peaceful process of selecting leaders in the United States,” Padilla said.

“It is good to be a witness in this practice of real power: The power of the people, power of their vote, power to choose. The only time a common man is more powerful than the politician,” the senator stressed.
