BUTUAN CITY – Police arrested a 24-year-old rape suspect after four years in hiding in Surigao del Norte.
Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office (PPO) Director Police Col. Nito T. Texon said the suspect was arrested in Mamanwa Villa, Purok 4, Camp Edward, Alegria town for failure to appear at scheduled hearings.
A warrant was issued by the Regional Trial Court of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, dated Sept. 13, 2024, with no bail recommended, Texon said.
Police said the suspect and two other men allegedly raped a minor on June 19, 2021 in Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte.
The victim was about to relieve herself outside her auntie's house when the suspect suddenly appeared, pointed a knife at her, and forcibly took her to a nearby sitio where the other two suspects were waiting.
“Together, they allegedly violently molested the victim, issuing serious threats,” Texon said, quoting a report from the Gigaquit MPS.
Texon cited apprehending units for the arrest of the suspect.
“I commend our field troops for successfully apprehending this wanted individual, and our commitment to securing justice for the victim remains our top priority, and we will persist in tracking down wanted individuals who have been evading authorities,” said Texon, adding, “We will not relent in upholding the rule of law to ensure that victims receive the justice they deserve."
PRO 13-Regional Public Information Office (RPIO) chief Police Major Jennifer S. Ometer said the suspect is under the custody of the Alegria MPS for proper disposition.
