The Department of Tourism (DOT) has presented the Philippines' progress in using artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable tourism at the World Travel Market (WTM) Ministers’ Summit in London.

DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco said the country is moving forward with tourism innovation through its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Roadmap 2.0, which led to the establishment of a Center for AI Research.

Focused on disaster resilience, sustainable agriculture, and urban planning, the center targets areas closely linked to tourism success.

Frasco noted that the DOT’s AI integration—such as smart hotel systems and AI-driven waste management—has been widely embraced by the private sector, enhancing visitor experiences and promoting sustainability.

She also highlighted DOT’s enhanced digital services, including the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tours, Tourist Assistance Call Center, and the Travel Philippines app, which use GPS and other technologies to make travel more accessible and enjoyable.

“While we embrace AI, we ensure the 'human touch' remains, as Filipino hospitality is a core strength that sets our tourism industry apart,” Frasco said, noting that tourism supports millions of Filipino jobs and contributes over 8.6 percent to GDP.

Leading the Philippine delegation at WTM London 2024, Frasco showcased immersive travel experiences celebrating the Philippines' cultural heritage and scenic landscapes.

Through the Philippine Pavilion, DOT aimed to captivate international visitors with travel packages centered on cultural immersions, wellness, and regional festivals, blending technology with tradition to enhance the tourism experience.
