Lightning strike kills football player in Peru

A Peruvian football player was killed while five others were severely injured after lightning struck the field in the middle of the match during a tournament in the City of Huancayo in Chilca district.

Local reports said Jose Hugo De La Cruz Meza, 39, lost his life while others were badly injured and can be seen lying helpless after lightning hit the ground in the 22nd minute of the football match.

In a video that went viral, the tragic incident happened as teams Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca were in the middle preparing to leave the field when the bolt hit De La Cruz Meza directly and was instantly killed.

The match was actually suspended a moment before due to inclement weather.

De La Cruz Meda and his Juventud side were leading, 2-0, before the incident.
