EU releases €1.5M in emergency response to typhoon-struck areas

In response to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Trami, known locally as Kristine, in the Philippines, the European Union has approved €1.5 million in humanitarian aid to support the most affected populations. The funding will assist the hardest-hit areas, such as Bicol and Calabarzon, particularly those who have lost their homes and remain displaced.

During Kristine’s pass over Luzon, Visayas, and northern Mindanao, the storm triggered widespread flooding and landslides, leading to significant casualties and damage. Nearly one million people have been displaced, and approximately seven million people were affected.

This emergency funding is in addition to the €4.5 million already allocated to the Philippines this year in humanitarian aid. Nearly €2 million was previously provided following floods and tropical cyclones in Mindanao and other parts of the country in February, July, and September 2024.

“I am sad to see that only a few days after my visit to Manila, the Philippines was, once more this year, severely struck by a disaster,” said Janez Lenarčič, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management. “As I reiterated during my stay, the EU stands ready to help populations that are on the frontline of climate-related disasters.”
