Manila reaffirms commitment to women's rights, gender equality
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan has affirmed her commitment to the 18-day campaign to end Violence Against Women (VAW).
The nationwide advocacy, which runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 12, seeks to raise awareness, promote action, and strengthen efforts to end all forms of violence against women and girls.
The campaign has been strongly supported by Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto and the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW), which is spearheading the city’s efforts under the leadership of its head, Re Fugoso.

Lacuna-Pangan emphasized the city's active participation in the campaign, which is designed to create lasting change for women’s safety and empowerment.
"We, in Manila, stand in solidarity with the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, running from November 25 to December 12, 2024. This nationwide advocacy aims to raise awareness, promote action, and strengthen support for ending all forms of violence against women and girls," the mayor said during the campaign launch.
The theme of this year’s campaign, “United for a VAW-free Philippines,” coupled with the sub-theme, “United for a VAW-free Philippines and sub-theme: VAW: Bigyang Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras,” is a call for action for the entire community to unite in the fight against gender-based violence.
The mayor urged Manileños to take part in activities that empower women, educate the public, and create safe spaces for all.
Meanwhile, Fugoso, echoed the city's strong commitment, emphasizing that the MDSW is working closely with other government agencies to ensure a VAW-free Manila.
“Manila, VAW Free na, magnificent pa! Bawal ang Bastos sa Maynila (Manila is VAW Free now. Rudeness is not allowed in Manila),” Fugoso declared, reinforcing the message that any form of abuse or violence against women will not be tolerated in the city.
The 18-day campaign to end VAW is part of a larger national effort aimed at addressing gender-based violence and ensuring women’s rights are upheld.
As the city of Manila rallies behind this important cause, local officials called on citizens to participate actively in creating a safer and more inclusive community for women and girls.
The campaign, which involves various awareness-raising activities, seminars, and community outreach programs, serves as a reminder that violence against women is a societal issue that requires collective action and continuous advocacy.
