The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said it is intensifying its preparations and support operations for ports and coastal communities affected by Typhoons Nika and Ofel.
In an interview with state-controlled PTV-4 on Thursday, Nov. 14, PCG spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Michael John Encina highlighted Coast Guard’s proactive measures amid continuous storms passing through the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) that their preparations are constant and extensive.
He explained that the PCG has been closely coordinating with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to provide immediate assistance to stranded passengers, including hot meals and temporary support when necessary.
“Katuwang po natin ang PPA, nagpo-provide tayo sa kanila ng mga hot meals (We are partnering with the PPA, and we are providing them with hot meals,” Encina said.
The PCG said it is also focused on ensuring the safety of coastal residents, particularly fisherfolk.
“Nandiyan ang ating pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga coastal communities, at sinasabi natin sa mga mangingisda na huwag pumalaot kapag ganitong panahon (We continue to communicate with our coastal communities, advising our fishermen not to go out to sea when weather conditions are dangerous),” the PCG spokesperson said.
In addition to support for stranded passengers, the PCG said it has mobilized its fleet for immediate deployment.
“Mula sa unang araw ng mga bagyo, handa ang aming pitong barko para sa relief at rescue operation (From the very first days of these recent typhoons, we prepared seven vessels for relief and rescue operations),” said Encina.
He added that the PCG Auxiliary units, a volunteer component of the agency, have been actively involved in preparing relief packs and supplies.
Such efforts, he said, are coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the PCG Auxiliary.
“Ang ating Coast Guard Auxiliary ay malaking tulong, tumutulong sila para makalikom ng relief goods (Our Coast Guard Auxiliary is a great help, they assist in gathering relief goods),” Encina said.
Also, the PCG spokesperson underscored the importance of coordination with the local government’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs).
