Over 230 schools nationwide are considered “very high risk” for further learning losses due to the frequency of natural hazards, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
DepEd data shows that 239 areas across the country are classified as "very high risk" for additional learning losses due to frequent natural hazards and severe damage they have experienced, affecting 377,729 learners.
Additionally, DepEd reported that 4,771 schools, serving 3,865,903 learners, are categorized as "high risk."
Addressing learning losses
During the National Management Committee (ManComm) meeting in Tacloban City, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara convened the agency’s key officials to explore interventions for addressing learning losses.
This urgency stems from class suspensions caused by severe weather disturbances.
DepEd noted that in the current school year, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) has already recorded 35 class disruptions.
“This accounts for the highest number of school days lost, mainly due to natural disasters and calamities,” DepEd said.
DepEd also highlighted that other severely impacted regions, including Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon, each experienced at least 29 class disruptions, some of which were caused by human-induced hazards such as fires.
Interventions
To ensure the continuity of learning, especially in affected regions, DepEd emphasized one of the interventions it will implement: the Dynamic Learning Program (DLP).
“DLP can be implemented in schools as make-up classes and catch-up sessions in temporary learning spaces,” DepEd said. “The initiative features parallel classes, activity-based engagement, student portfolios, and a reduced homework policy,” it added.
The DLP was developed by Dr. Christopher Bernido, an education advocate and Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, who attended the ManComm meeting to address questions.
DepEd noted that the DLP is just one of the many interventions being implemented across its field offices.
Khan Academy, a partner of DepEd, also showcased its platform during the meeting to supplement learners' skills and knowledge through Khan PH's online learning content.
