BACOLOD CITY – A retired teacher was killed in a fire on her 84th birth anniversary in Purok 4, Barangay Aguisan, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Sunday night, Nov. 10.

Fire Officer 2 Ronel Ivan Labansauan, arson investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Himamaylan, identified the fatality as Amelita Gicana.
Labansauan said the victim was sleeping when the fire broke out at 11:21 p.m.
Her son and two companions tried to rescue her failed due to extreme heat and smoke.
The victim’s 54-year-old son sustained burns in his head during the rescue attempt.
Labansauan said that Gicana’s body was found on the floor of her bedroom where the fire originated.
Arson investigators said the victim was trapped and failed to get out as the fire which damaged her two-story house made of mixed materials immediately spread.
The BFP declared fire out 37 minutes later. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
