900 sacks of smuggled sugar seized in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Four persons were arrested in Barangay Cawit, a coastal barangay here, on Monday, Nov. 11, for allegedly smuggling sacks of sugar.

Police nabbed three truck drivers and a truck helper during the operation at the Baradero de Cawit shipyard in this city's east coast.

Authorities discovered two trucks loaded with some 900 bags of sugar and a stack of sacks containing the same item nearby.

The suspects face criminal charges for violating Republic Act 10611, otherwise known as the Food Safety Act of 2013, and Republic Act 10845 or the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016.

Investigation is still ongoing to identify the owner of the contraband seized during a joint operation led by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Special Operations Unit- RID 9 (SOU-RID 9) and Zamboanga City Police Station 9.
