Rian Marco Tirol and Joshua Ang made waves at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2024 in Singapore after resetting Philippine records in short course on Friday, Nov. 1.
The 23-year-old Tirol navigated the 25-meter pool and clocked his personal best of 27.56 seconds in the men’s 50-meter breaststroke, eclipsing the eight-year-old mark of 27.65sec set by James Deiparine at the World Championships in Windsor, Canada pending ratification.
He, however, failed to advance to the eight-player medal round after placing 16th overall out of 48 swimmers.
The day before, the 20-year-old Ang also posted a new PH mark in the men’s 100m butterfly with a time of 53.65sec, erasing the 10-year-old record of 54.67sec set by Olympian Jessie Lacuna at the 2014 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Ang, however, did not advance to the finals after finishing 19th overall in the heats among 45 swimmers.
He also competed in the men’s 50m butterfly where timed 24.12sec and landed 25th, and in the men’s 200m fly where he registered 2 minutes and 16.85sec at 24th.
Meanwhile, Xiandi Chua and Jasmine Mojdeh placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the finals of the women’s 200m fly.
Chua timed 2:14.10 -- just a hairline from her 2:14:11 qualifying mark -- while Mojdeh registered 2:16:58, the same time as her qualifiers.
Australia’s Brittany Castelluzzo captured the gold with 2:03.92, while fellow Aussie Bella Grant (2:03.92) and Finland’s Laura Lahtinen (2:06.83) bagged silver and bronze, respectively.
