Man shoots cousin dead for throwing leaves in sugarcane field


BACOLOD CITY – A 54-year-old laborer was allegedly shot dead by his cousin who he accused of throwing leaves in his sugarcane plantation in Sitio Balungay, Barangay Montilla, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Police identified the victim as Danilo Basa.

Police Major Jerald Muya, Moises Padilla police chief, said that the victim visited his sugarcane plantation and saw his 36-year-old cousin.

Basa confronted the suspect for allegedly throwing sugarcane leaves in his sugarcane field, triggering a heated argument where the suspect drew a gun and shot Basa twice in the chest.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

The suspect surrendered to the police and turned over the gun.

The suspect said he shot Basa as felt threatened as he was armed with a bolo.

Recovered from the crime scene was a fired .45 caliber cartridge case.

Police said that the victim and the suspect bore  grudges against each other that escalated during their conflict.

Homicide charges have been filed against the suspect.
